Evolving the Care Team for Early Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease

At the virtual 2021 European Academy of Neurology (EAN) Annual Meeting, an expert panel from the Vrije University Medical Center (VUmc), Amsterdam, discussed the ways in which a multidisciplinary team can be developed for the early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) to provide better patient experiences and clinical outcomes. In this series of three sessions, the faculty follow a framework for the optimal patient journey encompassing patient detection, diagnostic procedures, and patient management strategies, and they describe the current state of clinical practice with discussion of how processes can be optimized.

The Early Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease: A Patient-centered Conversation with the Care Team

At the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) 2021 virtual conference, a panel of external experts presented a coherent story of patient care: the Alzheimer’s disease (AD) specialist, the neuropsychologist, and the imaging/biomarker expert. A case study was used to explore ways in which cognitive and functional assessments, in addition to pathophysiological biomarkers of AD, may support earlier detection, referral, and diagnosis of AD.

PET Imaging in Potentially Evolving Treatment Paradigms in Alzheimer’s Disease

At the virtual 2021 Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) Annual Meeting, an expert panel discussed the utility of positron emission tomography (PET) imaging for the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The faculty explored fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG), amyloid, and tau PET, highlighting the role of PET imaging in clinical trials and as part of the diagnostic workup in routine clinical practice. Through case study discussion, the faculty provided key considerations for the optimal diagnostic use of PET imaging for patients with cognitive impairment.
